Although the iPod revolutionized the manner we get pleasure from our tunes on-the-go nearly a decade ago, the introduction of iPhone in 2007 has seen a decline within the popularity of moveable media devices in general ever since.

That said, the market has still continued to stay afloat, and even the iPod touch – dubbed the iPhone while not the ‘phone’ part – pushes good numbers amongst younger people.

The iPod nano has been the device subject to most modification over the years, with the present version taking in components of the iPod touch (screen), iPod Shuffle (belt clip), to present a nifty very little device at the pinnacle of portability.

Despite packing during a half-decent color screen, the shortage of wireless connectivity or camera – as well being deficient of any video playback or photo viewing – means that it should as well be monochrome.

In a move which may bring some zest to what seems to be an ageing format, a prototype of a next-gen iPod nano has appeared that we featured today as well courtesy of MIC Gadget, and while keeping the form issue of the present iteration, also includes a 1.3 mega-pixel camera.

Apparently the two month old prototype, that makes for a curious product within the 1st place, is dogged with problems. Though you may not expect a lot of from a 1.3 mega-pixel cam within the 1st place, its auto iris lens takes overexposed photos, that means shots snapped seem white-looking and washed-out.

Citing factory sources, MIC Gadget reckons Apple is functioning on addressing the problem before release, with the device thought to be arriving within the next couple of months. A 2-megapixel camera was also tested, however the resulting pictures were manner below standard, therefore the concept was eventually scrapped.

We cannot actually see the aim of including a camera to the iPod nano, particularly one that simply won’t reach the heights we’ve come back to expect over the last few years. Maybe Apple, sensing the iPod range is in its twilight years, is just putting it out there – throwing concepts and ideas against the wall, and hoping they’ll stick?

Now, here comes the fun part, MIC Gadget is also reporting that the iPod nano might truly land within the 1st half of 2012:

So, here’s what we all know therefore far: the lens aperture problem would delay the discharge of next-gen iPod Nano, it would arrive 1st quarter or early 2nd quarter 2012. It will not follow one year release cycle.

One thing’s for sure, we’re not massively impressed.
